Dave Yukelson Obituary, Death State College, PA – The sports and academic communities are mourning the loss of Dr. Dave Yukelson, the retired Director of Sport Psychology Services at Penn State University. He passed away on March 8, 2025, at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after a courageous battle with a rare neuroendocrine tumor (NET) and complications from carcinoid heart disease. Dave’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary career dedicated to supporting the mental well-being and development of athletes at all levels.
During his time at Penn State, Dave Yukelson made significant contributions to the field of sports psychology. As the Director of Sport Psychology Services for Penn State’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department, Dave worked closely with athletes, coaches, and staff, providing guidance on managing the mental challenges that accompany high-performance sports. His expertise was invaluable in helping individuals develop mental resilience and cope with the pressures of competitive athletics.
After his retirement from Penn State, Dave continued to make an impact in the field of sports psychology as an independent contractor. His work and guidance touched the lives of many, with his reputation as a skilled and compassionate professional leading to ongoing relationships with athletes and coaches throughout his career. Dave’s legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. He was deeply loved and respected for his positive attitude, kindness, and ability to offer support to those who needed it most.
His influence in the sports community and the field of psychology is immeasurable. Colleagues and former students remember him not only as an expert in his field but also as a mentor and friend. Dave Yukelson’s passing followed a heart surgery in early March 2025, which he had undergone in an effort to improve his quality of life. While the surgery itself was successful, complications arose that his body could not overcome. Dave faced this difficult challenge with the same positive outlook and determination that defined his life and career.
In honor of his life and legacy, a memorial service is being planned in Los Angeles. His family has also set up a CaringBridge page where friends, colleagues, and former athletes can share their memories and tributes. Though Dave is no longer with us, his work and the impact he had on the lives of others will continue to inspire future generations of sports psychologists and athletes. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
